Notch has been doing a ton of patch releasing in the past week or so. There are a bunch of fixes for SMP problems in the game, but the best update of the bunch so far (in my opinion) was released today:

* Added lakes and rare lava pools, both on the surface and randomly in caves.

So what, you may say, there was already still water in the world. Yeah, but not inland lakes and underground pools of water and lava just sitting there. You can check this out in any existing world just by moving around and getting the game to generate new chunks, if you like. Or you can start a new world. It's pretty sweet, in this humble blogger's opinion.

Notch has released several patches for the SMP update that he put out the other day. There are still a ton of bugs in SMP, but it's getting better. Here's a link to his blog.
